PRODUCTION DESCRIPTION

The Story
There is a resonant humanity that links all of the characters to one another and to the audience within HEATHER WOODBURY'S "WHAT EVER" (an American Odyssey in 8 ACTS). Focusing on the lives of more than a dozen characters – among them Oregon rave boy Skeeter, hitchhiking across the country; the progressive-thinking octogenarian Violet, remembering her life from her bohemian youth in prewar Paris to her jazz –clubbing in postwar Greenwich Village; and the street-smart prostitute Bushie, holding forth on the profanity of the world – Heather Woodbury has forged a unique kind of fiction that combines the immediacy of performance art with the narrative structure and subtle characterization of a traditional novel.
The Play
"WHAT EVER" started in the back of a bar in NYC's East Village where for nine months straight, Woodbury performed an entirely new show every week. The long addictive yarn she spun was shortened and tightened into "what ever" (an American Odyssey in 8 ACTS) by director Dudley Saunders and has toured extensively, from Laurie Anderson's MELTDOWN FESTIVAL in London, to the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. Each act is about 70 minutes long.
WHATEVER became a “living novel” in 2003 and is published by the fabulous Farrar, Strauss and Giroux/ Faber. This living novel is available at any local bookstore.
