PRODUCTION DESCRIPTION

Home for the holidays...what shall we hang, the holly or each other? A cold wind is blowing through England's royal household this Christmas of 1183. And the games have begun: a human chess game of intelligence, cunning, greed, ambition and betrayal. Kings, queens and princes everywhere you look...and a single pawn. The stakes are high--the most powerful kingdom on earth--and the price of winning is even higher.

James Goldman's tale of royal intrigue debuted forty years ago in New York and the 1968 film, starring Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn has become an unquestioned classic, winning Miss Hepburn her third Academy Award. Samford Studio presents, on the Academy Theatre stage, Goldman's darkly humorous "tragicomedy" of a family in crisis. Oh well, what family doesn't have its ups and downs?

If you haven't visited Academy Theatre's new home in Avondale Estates, "Lion in Winter" is an excellent introduction.
