PRODUCTION DESCRIPTION

Odon von Horvath's bittersweet "Don Juan Comes Back From the War." is almost unknown in this country. Horvath, a Hungarian playwright who wrote in German, was at war with the Nazis when he created his version of the great legend in the 1930's. While it is set just after World War I, it is full of political and philosophical jibes at his enemies, and his allusive language and use of dialect make translation an iffy business. Popular German music of the 1920's often accompanies productions of the play, unobtrusively alluding to many theatrical and operatic themes associated with the Don Juan legend.

For all its brevity (this version is about 90 minutes), the play is epic in structure, and in its reach. In the Theatre Emory production, a disciplined cast -- a man and 10 women who share scores of roles -- moves so easily, and enjoyably, through its many turns that at the end one is a little astonished to realize how complex the story is.
