Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck
Steinbeck at the Tavern
Sunday, March 23, 2008
4.0
In a venture away from its bread and butter Shakespeare, the New American Shakespeare Theater’s production of John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" is right on! This show is riveting and completely up to the Tavern's high performance standards. Newcomer Travis Smith is at once strong and vulnerable as Lenny. Other standouts are Marcus Durham as Crooks and Doug Kaye as Candy. Jeff Watkins makes great use of the Tavern’s intimate atmosphere with a set that complements Steinbeck's study of friendship and sacrifice. The music adds atmosphere and continuity. Overall, I can't think of a better way to spend an evening than with the American Shakespeare Company.
