One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, by Dale Wasserman
Surprisingly lighthearted, puts Kubrick neatly in his place
Wednesday, February 25, 2009
4.5
Having only seen the Stanley Kubrick / Jack Nicholson movie previously, I was not prepared for vastly different approach of the stage production. New Dawn prepared a wonderfully intricate production. What caught my attention most were the subtleties as the inmates constantly jockeyed for position within the group. the non-verbal mockery during group therapy alone was worth the price of admission. I don't wish to give the impression that this was a comedy, or that the focus of the show was cheap slapstick; but the humorous elements were used effectively to prevent the audience from being drawn fully into the downer ambiance Kubrick favored. An unexpected bonus was the 'narration' of the Chief during scene cuts, which I first took to be psychotic ramblings, later proved the impetus for the bond between the two main characters.

All in all, Cukoo was well worth a visit to Duluth. I highly recommend it.
