Oliver!, by Lionel Bart
Oliver

2.0
This is my first review so I will keep it short and to the point. Act1 Theater's production of Oliver was mediocre. The music was too slow. The set looked ok but the changes inbetween the scenes were too long and moreover distracting. The cast lacked energy. In the scenes with Nancy, the rest of the cast members relied on her to carry the scene as she was the only one with a proper understanding of her role. The choreography screamed simplicity however this cast werent clear of the movements. The thing that helped this show at all was the singing. There were some great singers in this cast,Nancy had an great voice as well as Mrs. Bedwin, however her weight and costume were distracting. Bill Sykes has no great singing ability however it worked well with his mean character. The Artful Dodger was on crutches and played by a girl. Oliver who was also played by a girl, was very unconfident in both her lines and her singing. Mr. bumble and Widow Corney had great scenes that were funny, however not portrayed clearly. Mrs. Sowerberry did not sing the best but kept my attention. All in all, this was a mediocre performance of such a great musical.
