PRODUCTION DESCRIPTION

Set in 1938 in pre-war Austria, The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria Rainer, a free-spirited nun who is hired by a widower, Captain George Von Trapp, to be the new governess for his seven children. The captain runs his home near Salzburg like the ship he once commanded, but that all changes when Maria arrives from the convent. Her natural warmth and kindness win over the incorrigible children and ultimately the captain as well. However, their happiness is shattered when the Nazis invade Austria forcing the entire family to flee their homeland.

One of the most popular musicals of all time, The Sound of Music was the final collaboration of the renowned team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Their words and music continue to inspire us all to “climb every mountain” and find comfort in simple things like “raindrops on roses.”
