2.0
Shakespeare's text has been edited to emphasize essential character disclosure and plot development at the cost of the Bard's poetry. The cast exacerbates the editorial decision by adopting prose recitation which ignores or hides rhythm and rhetoric. As a result, much of the poetic nuance is diminished or lost. This is an Othello stripped for action. There is good, almost ingenious, use of the set and the principle actors--
Neal Hazard, David Harrell and Wendy Malconian--all perform more than adequately with the material which they have been given.
All in all, this is an interesting production that is limited and somewhat disappointing because of the departures chosen from the original text.
