A "Nice" play

4.0
I dont really have the literary and theatrical chops to do a formal review but I would like to offer my impressions of this fine production by CenterStage North of Over the River and Through the Woods by Joe DiPietro.

Id googled this play thinking Id audition and found that it was a nice play designed to tug the heartstrings. Being a crusty confirmed curmudgeon I thought I dunno. . . Basically the story of a young man parting with his grandparents but so much more than that.

Kelly David Carr in the lead role, claims on his bio that this was his second time on stage but that absolutely cant be true. The poise and craft with which he carried the narrative of the play was very impressive. The four senior actors in the cast (and I use that word lovingly) Pete Borden, Diane LeGrand Hail, Murray Sarkin and Barbara McFann, were a pleasure to watch as well. Attacking their characters with gusto and love, their ensemble work was much fun to watch. I confess to a bias with Gillian Stevens with whom Ive worked, as an actor the girl simply walks on water - her small role here was so wonderfully realized. Kudos must go also to Director Barbara Rudy for her apt casting and for finding just the right balance of comedy and pathos.

What is fun about community theater is that every so often you stumble across a gem where the play becomes so much more than the sum of its parts. The night I viewed the performance the audience loved the show and even this curmudgeons brittle heartstrings were tugged. This is a well crafted show, only a few more performances left, go see it!
