PRODUCTION DESCRIPTION

In the spirit of last autumn’s feminized Doctor Faustus, Resurgens Theatre Company returns to Atlanta this spring with John Fletcher’s long neglected proto-feminist reply to The Taming of the Shrew. Taking a leaf from Lysistrata, The Tamer Tamed turns the tables on Petruchio, Shakespeare’s “brave wife-breaker,” in a highly festive and boisterous battle of the sexes. Directed by Dr. Brent Griffin, this “original practices” production not only celebrates Fletcher’s colorful subversion of early modern patriarchal norms, but also demonstrates why seventeenth-century popular opinion held that, although Shrew was “liked,” Tamer Tamed was “very well liked.”
