PRODUCTION DESCRIPTION

FUNNEL CAKE FLOWERS & THE URBAN CHAMELEONS is a multimedia, interactive, project that combines web videos and live performance that satirically unveils people of color in America chameleon between white corporate America and their kinky hair handling, curry spice eating, hip gyrating and sometimes even tip-toeing up the courthouse steps in Manolo Blahniks to bail cousin Pookie out of jail America because it is complicated. Only Funnel Cake Flowers, The Urban Chameleons news reporter can translate, interpret and decode people of color who flip from watching CNN and Boondocks, listening to Yo Yo Ma and Jay Z, eating fried chicken and sushi, shopping at Target and Gucci.

FUNNEL CAKE FLOWERS & THE URBAN CHAMELEONS is comprised of real life stories collected by Emmy nominated writer, producer, and performer HaJ. The show offers a fresh and modern day perspective on civil rights activist, and scholar, W.E.B. Dubois theory Double Consciousness, which suggests that adapting two minds is crucial to the survival of people of color living in America. Poet, novelist and playwright, Paul Laurence Dunbar interprets a similar concept in his work, We wear the mask.

More than a century later and with our first African American president in office, people of color in America are still…. wearing…the… mask. But why? You will have to join the experience to find out!
