PRODUCTION DESCRIPTION

A father leaves his home and the family he loves dearly to light out for the land of opportunity, false mustaches, and deep, dark holes in the ground. Sweet, spare, and hypnotic, The America Play recreates the whole of our national history in an African American family whose story is too real for any history book. With gentle humor and haunting imagery, Parks (author of Venus and Spike Lee's Girl Six) has crafted a provacative meditation on what it really means to inherit the American myth.

Creative Loafing
by Curt Holeman
January 17, 2001
Curt sez "Audiences will appreciate The America Play...to the extent that they're willing to seek interpretations and inferences...it's a challenging show built around provocative ideas and haunting images, but one not always easy to sit through."
